IDEA AND INSPIRATION
The site is located in Haapsalu, on the Bürgermeister peninsula and it’s the northern most plot of a new housing development and next to disused military buildings still in the area. The L-shaped house creates a cozy courtyard opening towards south and west while providing protection from harsh winds. As the house sits at the top of a narrow peninsula it is possible to enjoy sea views from all of the main rooms and also from terraces which are located on three different levels.
The shape of the house is monumental and acts as a landmark shaping the design of a future housing development. Different offset volumes break up the scale of the house and relate to the eclectic context.
Taking into account the sensitive location and proximity to the sea, the ground level of the house has been significantly raised with only the garage sitting at a lower level. The façade facing the street is tranquil and private. Wide concrete steps lead up to the front door. The ground floor is occupied by a large living, dining and kitchen area opening up to a large west-facing terrace. The northern side of the terrace is bordered by the gym and sauna wing. The living and dining room with wide floor to ceiling windows extends throughout the house with sea views towards both sides of the peninsula. The second floor is more private with bedrooms and bathrooms and access to the roof terraces.
Façade of the house is finished with sandstone colour plaster, fitting with the atmosphere of a resort town while also bringing in hints from the mediterranean. The pastel tones are accented by black metal cassettes in some parts of the façade.
