IDEA AND INSPIRATION
The building is a contemporary residence that responds sensitively to its natural coastal context, situated in close proximity to the shoreline. The architectural concept is based on a clear horizontal articulation that follows the natural terrain and opens views toward the sea. The form appears almost like folded origami — a sculptural volume shaped through interrelated lines and surfaces.
The house consists of several volumetric parts, arranged in a staggered composition and unified by a continuous roof and terrace system. The diagonally folding roofline of the main volume creates a visually dynamic profile, while the horizontal balconies and terraces provide compositional balance. One part of the building is lower and elongated, the other taller and more vertically accentuated, together forming a rhythmically coherent architectural ensemble.
From an engineering standpoint, this building represents one of the most remarkable structural achievements in Estonia. Through close collaboration between architect and engineer, the load-bearing concrete shell appears to float, creating a sense of lightness. Few vertical supports interrupt the views, and those that exist are almost imperceptible.
The façade materials have been selected according to principles of natural harmony and sustainability. Vertical timber cladding dominates, framed by black metal or aluminium details and complemented by light-toned patterned concrete surfaces. The material contrasts emphasize the building’s functional zones, while the warm hue of wood creates a harmonious dialogue with the surrounding pine forest. Large glass surfaces bring abundant daylight into the interiors, visually merging the indoor spaces with the landscape.
The building’s placement follows the natural topography — lower levels open directly toward the waterfront, while the upper levels face the forest and the sky. The natural slope has been preserved with minimal landscape interventions; the rocky shoreline and greenery organically frame the architecture. Terraces opening toward the water and open-air leisure areas reinforce the strong relationship with the outdoor environment.
The architectural whole embodies the aesthetics of a luxurious yet contemporary living environment. It is a home that combines closeness to nature with privacy. The spaces are open and filled with light, and the layout considers both shared and intimate zones.
The residence is simultaneously sculptural and contextually sensitive. It exemplifies the best qualities of contemporary Nordic architecture, where form, material, and environment are brought into balanced harmony.
