IDEA AND INSPIRATION

The complex consists of a main house, a guest house and a sauna and is located at the western shore of Saaremaa. The vast open landscape is mostly natural grassland with patches of dense forest. The buildings are located at the border of the woods with wide open views towards the sea but still benefiting from cover of the forest. The forest also provides privacy between the main house and the guesthouse.

The architecture of the main house is derived from traditional forms and materials used in the region but combined with a contemporary approach characterised by large glass surfaces and angular roofs. The guesthouse uses simpler design principle with its A-frame construction.

The crown of the main house is a L-shaped living, dining and kitchen area which curves around a small Japanese garden and a terrace. Living room features a double height ceiling with a staircase leading to an open library space. The master bedroom, library and the roof terrace can all be opened up with sliding doors to create one large space with sea views on both sides of the house. The A-frame guesthouse features a floor to ceiling triangular glass façade towards the sea and double height living- and dining area with a loft. The staircase leading up to the loft also doubles as a fireplace. For better views ground around the house has been raised. A weathered pine hosts a treehouse for birdwatching.
