IDEA AND INSPIRATION

TOKUYA, a holiday retreat complex located in the coastal landscape of Keibu, is a contemporary architectural ensemble inspired by the understated elegance, balance, and deep connection to nature that characterize Japanese architecture. The complex consists of a main house, an outbuilding that also offers fully equipped guest accommodation, and a grill house with a sauna and washing facilities. Together, these buildings create a cohesive and harmonious environment for relaxation and social gatherings.

The name TOKUYA is derived from the Japanese language and reflects the essence of the place—a destination designed for tranquility, meaningful leisure, and inner balance. More than just a name, it symbolizes the core philosophy of the project, embodying an architectural approach that values simplicity, thoughtful design, and harmony with the surrounding environment.

The influence of Japanese architecture is expressed through the buildings’ strong horizontal lines, generous roof overhangs, and the seamless integration of indoor and outdoor spaces. The low-profile structures follow the natural contours of the landscape, while expansive glass surfaces frame views of the surrounding nature and allow daylight to penetrate deep into the interiors. The combination of timber, concrete, and glass creates a timeless aesthetic that is both contemporary and inviting.

At the heart of the complex stands the main house, designed as a place for shared moments with family and friends. Complementing it is the outbuilding, which provides not only practical storage space but also comfortable accommodation for guests, equipped with everything needed for an enjoyable stay. The separate grill house, complete with a sauna and lounge area, serves as a natural gathering place where the traditions of the Estonian sauna meet the calm and contemplative spirit of Japanese spatial design.

TOKUYA is more than a holiday retreat. It is a carefully crafted environment where architecture does not dominate the landscape but instead enhances it. Every building, view, and pathway has been designed with the intention of creating a place where visitors can step away from the pace of everyday life and experience a sense of balance between nature, space, and silence. Here, by the sea, architecture finds its greatest value not merely in its form, but in the feeling it creates for those who experience it.
